Meet Anna Doran: Our First Island Trails Scholarship Recipient

Island Trails is proud to introduce the first-ever recipient of the Island Trails Scholarship: Anna Doran, a passionate conservationist from Tyne Valley, PEI, who is currently pursuing her Master’s in Environmental Science at the University of New Brunswick.

Anna’s love for nature began early. Growing up in rural PEI, she was always outside—exploring, observing, and connecting with the natural world. “It just felt like a natural fit,” she says. Her curiosity for the environment only deepened in high school, thanks to a supportive teacher and the opportunity to take an online environmental science course. In many rural schools on the Island, options for science electives can be limited, so this experience opened new doors.

A graduate of Westisle Composite High School, Anna has already made her mark in environmental work on the Island. She’s worked with both the Richmond Bay Watershed Group and Island Nature Trust, gaining hands-on experience in conservation and community engagement.

Now deep into her master’s research—currently focused on bird ecology—Anna remains committed to environmental education and public outreach. “I love talking about what I do,” she says. “Conservation only works when we bring people along with us.” Her long-term goal is a career that blends science and public outreach—perhaps with Parks Canada. The new Sandhills National Park Reserve project in Western PEI is of particular interest to her. “That’s the kind of work I’d love to be involved in someday,” she says.

When she’s home, Anna enjoys the Community Trail in Tyne Valley and is a frequent user of the Confederation Trail. “They’re not just trails—they’re community connectors,” she says. “They help people fall in love with the outdoors.”

The Island Trails Scholarship supports Island students pursuing post-secondary studies in the environmental field, and is administered through the Community Foundation of PEI. Anna discovered the opportunity on the Foundation’s website, and the funds will go directly toward her tuition.

We’re thrilled to support Anna as she builds a career dedicated to protecting PEI’s natural beauty and inspiring others to do the same.

Congratulations, Anna—your trail is just beginning.
