Island Trails Volunteer Trail Crew Training Program

Island Trails is offering a Volunteer Trail Crew Training Program this spring, designed to help build the
next generation of trail stewards across Prince Edward Island.
The first training session will take place May 2, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Strathgartney Trail,
offering participants an introduction to the skills and knowledge needed to safely support trail
maintenance and stewardship.
The program is funded in part by Trans Canada Trail and uses the Trans Canada Trail volunteer training
curriculum, ensuring participants learn best practices used across Canada’s trail networks.
This first session will serve as Part 1 of the training, with a second, more advanced session planned for
later, allowing volunteers to continue building their skills and deepen their involvement in trail care.

Supporting the Next Generation of Trail Volunteers
While the program is open to anyone interested in trail stewardship, it is primarily aimed at people under
the age of 30, helping younger Islanders gain practical outdoor skills while becoming involved in caring for
their local trails. A limited number of spots may be available for participants outside this age group.
Island Trails hopes this initiative will help foster a new generation of volunteers who understand the value
of trails and feel empowered to help maintain them for years to come.

Learning the Foundations of Trail Stewardship
Participants will spend the day outdoors learning practical skills that support healthy, sustainable trails
and responsible outdoor recreation.

Using the Trans Canada Trail curriculum, the training will provide participants with practical knowledge
and confidence to support trail work safely and responsibly.

The training will cover:

  1. Preparing for the outdoors — including seasonal clothing, layering, and what to pack in your
backpack for a safe and comfortable day on the trail.
  2. Leave No Trace principles — guided by Indigenous teachings that emphasize respect for the land
    and responsible recreation.
  3. The value of trails and stewardship — exploring why trails matter and the role volunteers play in
    protecting them.
  4. Basic trail tools and safety — an introduction to common trail maintenance tools and how to use
    them safely.

Building a Community of Trail Stewards
Island Trails relies on volunteers to help build, maintain, and improve the Island’s trail network. From
installing boardwalks and signage to clearing brush and maintaining pathways, volunteers are essential in
keeping trails accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
This training program is an important step toward growing that volunteer community while ensuring
people have the knowledge and training needed to work safely and effectively.
Participants who complete this introductory training will also have the opportunity to take part in Part 2
later in the year, where they can further expand their skills and take on more hands-on trail work.

Join the Volunteer Trail Crew Training
Island Trails invites anyone with a love of the outdoors and an interest in giving back to the trails to
participate.

By building skills, sharing knowledge, and strengthening community connections, Island Trails hopes this
program will inspire more Islanders—especially young people—to take an active role in caring for the
trails that connect us to nature and to each other.
