Now you can do what you love — and earn a Red Dirt Seal Certificate along the way.

A New Way to Explore PEI!

The idea is simple: visit all participating trails, check in at each one, and once you’ve completed them all, you’ll earn your Red Dirt Seal Certificate.

How It Works

  • Visit each participating Island Trail
  • Follow the trail until you reach the designated check-in point
  • At each trail, you would need to
    • Scan the QR code using the app, or
    • Stamp your Paper Passport
  • Once you’ve completed all trails, you can apply to receive your Red Dirt Seal Certificate.
  • There is no time limit — go at your own pace and enjoy the journey.

We would like to thank Gray Group for their generous support in making this project possible.

We’d also like to thank Dalmac for their financial support in helping us print the paper passports.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are currently 12 Island Trails. To earn your Red Dirt Seal Certificate, you must visit all 12 trails and record each visit by checking in through the app or collecting a stamp in your paper passport.

No. You can complete the Island Trails Passport using either the app or a paper passport. You do not need to use both.

Send us an email at [email protected] with your mailing address, and we can mail a paper passport to you.

Paper passports may also be available at selected pickup locations. Follow our social media pages for the latest list of locations where you can pick one up.

Yes. You can visit the trails in any order and complete the Island Trails Passport at your own pace.

No, there is no deadline. Take your time, enjoy the trails, and request your certificate once you have visited all 12 locations.

Trailhead coordinates for each trail are provided in both the app and the paper passport. Use the coordinates to find the trailhead and begin your hike.
A Passport check-in sign is located approximately 2–3 km along each trail. When you reach the sign, you can scan the QR code or enter the provided code in the app.
For paper passports, you will find a physical stamp inside a small box attached to the sign.

You need to hike far enough to reach the Passport check-in sign, which is usually located approximately 2–3 km from the trailhead. You can then continue and complete the trail or return to the trailhead, depending on the route and your hiking plans.

If the trail has multiple loops, the check-in sign will be installed on the first loop closest to the trailhead. If it is a single-loop trail, the sign will be located somewhere along that loop.
If you complete the loop and still cannot find the sign, please email us at [email protected]. It may have been damaged or removed, or our maintenance team may already be working on a replacement.

Please take a photo of yourself at the Passport sign or its usual location and contact us with the name of the trail. We will help you record your visit.

Yes. One passport can be shared by a family or a group of friends completing the trails together.
When you request your Red Dirt Seal Certificate, simply let us know how many names you would like included on it.

The trails vary in length, terrain, and level of difficulty. To make the Passport Project accessible to more people, check-in signs are generally installed approximately 2–3 km from the trailhead, so most participants can reach them without completing the entire trail.
However, trail conditions and individual abilities can vary. Before participating, please assess your own health, fitness level, mobility, and hiking experience, as well as the abilities of any children or other members of your group. Participation is at your own risk.
Dogs are welcome on all Island Trails, but they must remain on a leash at all times.

Trail access and conditions may change because of weather, seasonal maintenance, or temporary closures. Please check current trail conditions before travelling to a trail, particularly during the winter and after severe weather.

If you are using the app: Once you have completed all 12 trails, the app will display a congratulatory message and give you the option to request either a printed or digital certificate.
For a printed certificate, provide your mailing address and the names you would like included. For a digital certificate, provide your email address and the names you would like included.
If you are using a paper passport: Once you have collected all 12 stamps, email a clear photo of the completed stamps page to [email protected].
Please let us know whether you would like a printed or digital certificate. Include your mailing address for a printed certificate or your email address for a digital certificate, along with all the names you would like included.

Participation in the Island Trails Passport Project is voluntary. All participants should take part at their own discretion, as this activity involves physical effort, including walking for extended distances. Please plan accordingly and choose trails that match your comfort and ability level.

For questions or more information about the project, please email [email protected].
