Thank you to all involved in providing this trail system. It is a great place to go for relaxation, solitude, and a good workout (particularly the blue loop!) while you're at it. I've hiked the Appalachian Trail, and never dreamed I'd see a little reminder of it on PEI!! |

hiking I want to thank you for the great job you are doing in the nature park of Dromore. The trails are well laid out and easily to find because of the markings. My brother Ton, visiting here from Holland, and I spent two days hiking the four trails and had a great time. Once more thanks so much, I hope more people take advantage of those beautiful trails. |

Thanks for a great trail Richard and I rode the trail (with some road sections interspersed) from end to end from Sept 30th to October 4th. What a great trail! We met friendly framers and others on our way and had a great time. We were fortunate to connect up the the Island East Cycling Event on a beautifil day on Saturday October 3 and had a great time meeting folks from the Island and visitors from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Congrats to the province for their support of the Conferation Trail and for all the volunteers who help maintain it. |

Island East Cycling Event 2009 To Grace, the committee, the volunteers, local groups, etc. who helped making this event such a success, a big Merci Beaucoup! And you even ordered up perfect weather!!! We love this event & look forward to it with great anticipation. To be able to cycle & enjoy the fellowship & nature w/o free of traffic is just great. And, we've even had traffic stop & let us cross busy roads ~ this can only happen on PEI! We look at our local NB Trail system and see only unfinished portions but worst of all, trails ruined by 4 wheelers. Although there are bright spots (City of Fredericton trail system, etc.), the trail between Cape Tormentine & Sackville is not really fit to ride. We applaud your Trail Officer program. We have found these volunteers to be most helpful during trail events & when we venture out on our own at other times. Besides being great ambassadors for the trail & PEI, I believe they are deterants to motorized vehicles from using the trail. So, again, many thanks. We look forward to your 2010 program. |

Our Cycling Trip accross the Island We wanted to send the Island Trails organisation this e-mail to tell you how much we enjoyed cycling across the Island this past month. This letter was also sent to Grace Blackette, whom was very helpful in providing information while preparing this trip. This is an idea we had for a year of so after I read somewhere in a magazine about PEI having completed the Confederation Trail from one end to the other. Well, since then, the idea of cycling the trail grew in my head. Last fall, our first child was born, but the idea of cycling the island never went away. With Skepticisms, we decided to embark in the adventure as a family and the rest is history. Our son Zavier (Zave) just turned eight months while we begin our trip. We decided that it would be better if my wife Tracy was to haul the bike trailer with Zave in it, while I would have a separate trailer behind my bike to haul our camping equipment, baby stuff, some food and personal supplies. We started our tip at North Cape and headed east. We decided to cycle the first leg of our trip on the road along the coast and spent the night at Jacques Cartier National Park. This was a good introduction to the weather to come, it was blowing hard and the rain started when we were about 30 minutes to the campground. Luckily we were the only tent there that night, so the campground attendants let us pitch in the cook shelter, which was great. The next morning, we headed towards Alberton, having heard that there was a great bakery and coffee out there. There we enjoyed warm coffee and a great breakfast, not to mention stocking up on some diapers and a few food supplies. From there we continued our trip on the Confederation trail, passing O'Leary around lunch and continued in partial rain heading for Green Park Provincial Park. However, passing through Tyne Valley, a local pub caught our eye (and stomach), and coincidently, there was also a B&B just around the corner. We decided to spend the night to eat, drink and dry our stuff. And if you are wondering about Zave, well he was cheering all that way and he was on a good start for the days to come. After a good night rest and a fantastic breakfast, we continued our journey with a stop to the Ship museum at Green Park and cycled the very scenic Route 12 via Grand River and Miscouche, where we visited the Acadian Museum and finally pitched our tent at Linkletter Provincial Park. On day four, we hooked back to the Confederation Trail in Summerside and cycled to Kensington for lunch and continued on the trail to a B&B in Hunter River. We found that this section of trail was very pleasant and that we were getting a real taste of rural PEI. The following day, we road our bikes to PEI National Park via Route 251, 6 and 15. A rather short day, we made many stops at shops that were located along the way. To this point, the weather for the past five days had been cloudy with showers and often heavy rain at night. Let's say not the beach weather we were hoping for. However, everybody we talked to keep insisting that the weather was to improve and that tomorrow would be very nice for the beach. Se we decided to stay an extra day here and hopefully enjoy some sun and beach time for a day. Not to mentioned that a little break from our bike saddle also looked appealing. Unfortunately, the weather never improved but we had a good rest anyway. On day seven, we got back on the saddle and road Route 6 towards Tracadie Cross where we connected back with the Confederation Trail and headed to Mount Stewart where, earlier in the trip, I had noted that a Trailside Cafe was suppose to be locate. The thought of a good coffee and food really had us making good time that morning. And fortunately, we made it there in time for lunch and left with a full belly in the direction to St. Peters. There we camped at a local camp site for the night. The next morning we had heard of another great place for breakfast, and were really excited, unfortunately the restaurant was closed on Monday’s, so it was another breakfast at a gas station. The weather looked like it would be better today since there were patches of blue between the black clouds that had been hanging above us for the past week. As the day went by, the weather got cooler, and on and off rain followed us all day. At least there was no risk of sun burn that day. From St. Peter’s, we cycled on the Confederation Trail to East Baltic (Route 302) then headed to Red Point Provincial Park, where you tried to find us. And the last day (day 9) we cycled on Route 16 to the light house at East Point where Frank met us with our car. And yes, finally we saw blue skies that day. This was a wonderful trip. Much more than what we had expected. Our son traveled very well in the bicycle trailer. And for the weather, well there were so many nice things along the way that a little rain for nine day's didn't bother us too much. Some of the highlights included stopping for the copious amount of wild strawberries along the route, the wild flowers everywhere, and of course finding that little bakery and warm coffee in a few little spots. The scenery was spectacular, and the quiet rolling hills were very nice to cycle through. Big thanks to Frank, who gratefully drove us to North Cape then took our car back to East Point nine days later. Without him the logistic of cycling the island from west to east, especially with a baby, would have been much more difficult. As for the trail condition, we were very impress at how well maintained it was. Numerous benches and shelters were present if needed. There is relay no major improvements that could be done. Our most challenging task was to find proper food for the baby while cycling. Unfortunately, villages’ convenience stores are not as available and as they might have been some time ago. Thanks to globalization! Having known that, we would have better planed our food supply. The other inconvenient was that often there is not too many camping site. We were wondering if it wouldn't be possible that arrangement be made with private individuals that reside near the trail to allow cyclist to set-up their tent on their property. An other suggestion would be to better indicate the location of grocery stores along the trail as we were never too sure where and what we would find adequate food supplies. We think that this trail network is a great asset to the people of PEI. It’s something unique in Canada and as more and more individuals and families are looking at low cost and more environmentally friendly tourism, we hope your government will continue to support the trail network and to invest for its long term keeping and expansion. And not to forget, a big thanks to the many volunteer who give their time and efforts to promote and care for the trail. |
