The Trail was purchased from Canadian National Rilways by the PEI Government in 1994 and since then the Government and Island Communities have been working to transform the old rail-road corridor into a world-class hiking, cycling and snow-mobile trail. Development of the trail has been undertaken by Government and non-profit community organizations such as Island Trails. Upon completion, segments of the trail are designated by Government under the Trails Act and become the responsibility of the Departments of Transportation & Public Works and Tourism PEI. In the year 2000 PEI became the first province in Canada to complete its section of the Trans Canada Trail.
