FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the history of the Confederation Trail? Who owns the Trail?
The Trail was purchased from Canadian National Rilways by the PEI Government in 1994 and since then the Government and Island Communities have been working to transform the old rail-road corridor into a world-class hiking, cycling and snow-mobile trail. Development of the trail has been undertaken by Government and non-profit community organizations such as Island Trails. Upon completion, segments of the trail are designated by Government under the Trails Act and become the responsibility of the Departments of Transportation & Public Works and Tourism PEI.
In the year 2000 PEI became the first province in Canada to complete its section of the Trans Canada Trail.
