April 22, 2009 — denis dunne
- International Appalachian Trail/Sentier International des Appalaches (IAT/SIA) a trail that links Maine and all the eastern Canadian provinces of NB, QUE., NS, NL and PEI. The trail connects with the Appalachian Trail in Maine atop Mt.Katahdin in BaxterState Park and continues to Crow Head, Strait of Belle Isle, NL, some1700 miles or 2736 kms..The Dromore Trail and Island Trails are proud to be part of this wonderful project.
- The IAT/SIA is one small project that allows us all to think and work beyond the borders that divide our countries and states and provinces. The use of the geological history as the principle of the trail development creates an opportunity to educate people on the geology of our place on the earth. The Dromore Woodland Trail is our portion of this great history.
- The trail itself gives hikers, and people who want to enjoy the outdoors, a chance to see the unspoiled countryside of our area, from woodlands to mountain tops.
- Stories about the trail in national and international magazines (of which there have been many) serve to acquaint the general public about the geography of our area. Our web site www.internationalat.org receives between 5 and 11 thousands of visits monthly. There are many speaking opportunities that occur through the year that provide another opportunity to promote travel to our place on the earth.
- While thru-hikers don't add much to the local areas through which they pass, their impact is multiplied many times in their telling others, both privately and publicly, about their experiences in our part of the world. Three of our thru-hikers have written books about their hikes on the IAT/SIA. Those books serve to further educate people about our area and their benefit lasts for a very long time.
