Twelve new and five experienced volunteers recently completed a two day Trail Officer training course at the Quality Inn in Charlottetown.The course was facilitated by Corporal Dave Cheverie who is a veteran officer with the Charlottetown Police Department and an adult education instructor.Volunteers from all three counties attended the course and are eagerly awaiting the disappearance of snow to get their bicycles on the trail.Twenty eight volunteers are now certified as Trail Officers and will be ambassadors on all 400 km of the Confederation Trail .
Volunteers receive their appointments from the Minister of Tourism whose department also sponsors and supports the program.Trained officers are eligible to write warning and summary offence tickets under the Trails Act but their main focus is public relations, education,information and voluntary compliance.
Receiving certificates were Frank Nicholson-York, David Kiff-Kensington, Claude Renaud-Ocean View, Louis Lebel-Ocean View, Barb Lundrigan-Seven Mile Road, Cliff Ruggins-St Catherines, Scott Clark-Charlottetown, Jane Hawkins-Charlottetown, Norma Douglas-Montague, Anne Marie Leroux-Cornwall, Ruth Richman-DeGros Marsh, Mireille Poirier-Mermaid.
Experienced volunteers who also completed the training include Frank Curley-Brookvale, Jan Meulenkamp-York, Mike Nesbitt-Miscouche, Maureen Doiron-Stratford and Coordinator Grace Blackette-Cardigan.Island Trails President Denis Dunne assisted Corporal Cheverie with the closing ceremony and the presentation of certificates.
